Which Anchors Are Best for a Carport?

carport anchorCarports are an affordable alternative to a garage: They're lightweight, easy to assemble, and ideal for keeping cars and other vehicles away from the outside elements, including rain, snow, and heat. Due to the lightweight nature of carports, it is necessary to secure it into the solid ground with an anchor.

The anchoring method you use depends on the surface below the carport's wall frame support. Anchoring to concrete or solid ground secures the carport, with concrete providing maximum protection.

There are four main styles of carport anchors. Please review them to determine which anchors are best for a carport:

  • Augur style anchors: They are suitable for grass, clay, asphalt, and unpacked soil with a corkscrew design that is simple to use and provides a reliable hold. You can remove and reuse them if you want to move your carport.
  • Hook anchors: They can be used in grass, clay, gravel, asphalt, and hard-packed or rocky soil. They are easy to use and don't require digging or creating large holes the way augur anchors do, but they are not reusable, so you only want them in permanent installations.
  • Rebar anchors: A 30-inch rebar anchor is recommended when a carport is mounted to a gravel surface. Rebars have a 5/8" nut welded onto the end and are installed through a hole and drilled into the base rail.
  • Cement and concrete anchors: If your carport is being placed on a cement or concrete surface, these anchors provide a strong hold.
