carport side extensionsValance carports are great for everyday storage of a vehicle. They provide sufficient protection from water and the sun, while allowing for easy access to vehicles parked underneath. While they are great for everyday storage, there are some ways a valance carport can be modified to provide better protection for vehicles in the winter.

What is a Valance Carport?

Valance carports come in many different lengths, widths, and heights. They can store a variety of possessions, such as cars, trucks, RVs, motorcycles, and ATVs. They are built from heavy-duty galvanized steel tubing that is resistant to rust, fire, termites, and rot. Unlike carports that use polyethylene covers, valance style carports use metal roofing. The roof will come down to cover the sides but normally only about a foot to provide side protection and force water farther away from the carport's contents.

What can I do to modify my valance carport for the winter?

Side Extensions - Can vary in length, but will provide added side protection to a valance carport. Side extensions will attach to a valance carport below the roof overhang and will help protect possessions from being damaged.

Gable Enclosure Kits - This will turn a standard valance carport into a fully enclosed shelter. A gable enclosure kit is the best way to modify a valance carport so it can provide all around protection from the winter elements. Snow, wind, and other winter elements will not be able to damage anything stored inside a valance carport that has been modified with a gable enclosure kit. The kit will include framing, sheet metal, screws, and vinyl trim to make the transformation complete.

Standard valance carports do not provide the same full protection that a carport with a polyethylene cover will, but is made from top-of-the-line, heavy-duty materials. The galvanized steel frame is strong enough to withstand the harshest elements. The metal roof will provide protection from the sun's ultraviolet rays and water. Once a valance carport is modified with side extensions or a gable enclosure kit, it will be able to provide the best protection during the winter season.
